125 Gallon Reef Tank
My reef tank is a 125 gallon AGA tank with a partitioned 55 gallon AGA tank as a sump. The tank is built into the wall of my finished basement with a 3 1/2 by 9 foot room behind it.
Lighting is provided by 2 96 Watt 10000K, 2 55 Watt 10000K, and 2 55 Watt actinic. All are Power compacts from AH Supply.
Above the main tank is a 25 Gallon refugium full of mostly feather culleurpa, maintained by two peppermint shrimp, a glass shrimp and thousands of pods and small snails. The refugium is fed from a tap off of the number two main tank return pump. It then gravity feeds back to the main tank. I use gravity feed to preserve the life of as much of the circulating larva from the pod population as possible.
All pumps are the submersible type, mostly MAG's Hagen power heads. The Hagens are controlled by an Aqua Controller II to move the currents. The AQ2 also runs two blue incandescent moon lights along with all lighting and heaters, and monitors and logs PH and ORP.
Calcium additions are handled by a Koralin calcium reactor, with other trace elements added manually.
The main tank has a full length sand plenum with 5 inches of live sand. The refugium just a 4inch deep sand bed. All filtration is provided by the plenum, the rocks, the sand and the refugium. A Precision Marine CVC-626 skimmer handles foam duty. I am happy to say that as of Jan 04, I have not done a water change whatsoever since the initial setup in April 03. I firmly believe that the plenum and the refugium keep my nutrient levels very low and coral and coralline growth is steadily progressive.
Now on to the pictures....
